First and foremost I got a better understanding of what we are going to explore this year in our sessions. I am excited about what I can bring in and apply in my classroom. I like the fact that we get updates automatically about the sites that we subscribe to, yet my concern is when I will be able to find the time to read up an all the information.
I am looking forward to all of the new ideas that I can use in the classroom. I really want to be able to use the smartboard more effectively than I use it now. I think the biggest challenge is going to be programming myself to make time to keep up with the technology end of things.
First and foremost is that a google earth image..?...
Anyways I think that it will be neat to find different ways to incorperate some of the things we are learning in the MLTI class into our own classroom....even this week I started leaving some things untied like how to go about solving certain problems and then going back and reflecting....and showing what i would do....but allowing them to try it and make their own ..."path"...
I forgot to talk about the one thing i want to know....how can we do allow the students to take full control (especially in the conditions that we are currently in) and still have structure?
Hey Bubba, It is when I finally gave up control that I finally go control. Last year the current 8th grade was, and probably still is, a horrible group of behavior problems. I had them for Maine History. They hated the book and the lessons that I controlled. So I ditched the book and control and asked them what they wanted to know about Maine History. We created portfolios and when kids found exciting things, lots of what I would never have thought of, they taught the class. My worst students became my most creative and interested in learning.
That sounds fun but I teach math and science and its hard to be creative with alegbra although...but like you said we ditched our books and I am allowing students to explore through teaching.....my two sciecne groups are doing presentations....we've built volcanoes and taken pictures of their explosions...we've gone outside and found missing objects using a compass....etc...my frustration comes when I think I can trust them to use the ladies room to wash their hands and our custodian finds paint on the walls of the stall.....etc...
I agree Gordon! Time to read all the updates is hard to come by. At least you can look at the titles and filter out the items you don't want to read pretty quickly.
Mary, I'll be modeling different ways to use the SmartBoard throughout the sessions. As far as keeping up with technology, good luck. It's my job, and I have a hard time finding the time!
Ken, Yes it's a Google Earth image...I'll show you how I got it in the blog, if you want! I like the way you talk about going back and reflecting with the students. It's a crucial part of constructivism that gets left out often because of time constraints. We will be doing a session on managing technology in the classroom. I hope we don't run out of sessions!
Vicki, I appreciate your sharing of past experiences. It's through this type of reflection and sharing that we grow as educators.
Having been in the regular classroom for 22 years, I appreciate the complexities of teaching today. For the last three years I have been a Certified eMINTS Trainer/Mentor and my job is to coach teachers in using inquiry-based teaching in a technology-rich environment. Working with 19 different school districts is a challenging job, but one I look forward to every day.
